Thrifting Days!

Yesterday, I found myself at the closest thrift store, Goodwill, with these three lovely wall hangings in hand. They're vintage Holly Hobby girls, and oh so adorable! The first and third were each $0.69 and the second was $2.99, bringing my grand total to $4.37 plus tax.

It always brings me such great joy to find present day designers pulling inspiration from our past, so I thought I'd share this one with you. Brooks Brothers along with costume designer Jaine Byrant have recently designed and released their limited edition Mad Men suit. Together they have created the sophistication of the 1960's look for business men in the present day. They have done so by implementing great tailoring, construction, color choice and all those necessary details that stem from the 1960's. The suit is available online at the Brooks Brothers website, and is also available in select stores. Pick this one up while you can!

Raven Denim & Hailey's Hand Me Downs

Raven Denim recently came out with their Spring 2010 look book, and as I started flipping through the pages I was overwhelmed with joy to see one of my Hailey's Hand Me Down's pieces paired with their darling denim. The piece is a 1970's plaid poncho and is absolutely darling. One of their stylists for the line purchased the poncho from Raggedy Threads Vintage Shoppe, located in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles, where I was selling my pieces at the time. They also mixed in lovely pieces from Raggedy Threads including vintage blouses, and handmade jewelry from Colombia. The styling done in their look book is flawless, and I am very proud that Hailey's Hand Me Downs had a very small part in the process. The look book turned out beautifully and I am extremely anxious to see the line this Spring!

Chloe: Fall 2009 Ready to Wear: Runway Show

The following photographs come from the designer Chloe, and are part of their fall 2009 ready to wear collection. I thought I'd share my favorite outfits from their runway show with you so that you could get inside my head a bit as far as new, designer fashion goes. I'm an old soul, and my heart truly belongs in vintage fashion, but it gives me great joy to see designers such as Chloe taking inspiration from our past and bringing it in to new designs in the present. Their designs always seem to give me a 1960s'/1970s' feel, and anything resembling those decades seems to bring a smile to my face. The collection captures femininity and strength, and in my opinion is absolutely beautiful.

Early Mornin' Inspiration

I am currently sitting in one of my very favorite coffee shops with a chai latte in hand and excitement for vacation on my mind. Hailey's Hand Me Downs etsy shop will sadly be on "vacation mode" tomorrow, September 22nd, through Sunday, October 4th while I'm away. This will make our shop unavailable to the public, meaning no purchases in that time frame. (More of a reason to stop by the shop today for our sale!) I will be taking the next couple weeks to visit with family and old friends, and of course to do some vintage treasure hunting in the small towns these people I love reside in. I am hoping to find beautiful long dresses for fall, darling shoes and handbags, and some oh so lovely acrylic sweaters. My only worry is that I won't be able to fit all my finds in my suitcase home! Please be sure to stop by the blog in the weeks to come. Even though the store will be temporarily unavailable, I still plan on keeping you all up to date here on our blog. Raggedy Threads Vintage Event!

Stylin' Ladies with a Vintage Touch

These gals are two of my absolute favorite musicians as well as style icons.

The first, is Zooey Deschanel, one of the singers for the band She & Him. Her other band member is M. Ward, and together they have created band with a sixties pop sound and a folk feel. As you may know Zooey Deschanel is also an up and coming actress and has recently stared in the film "Yes Man" with Jim Carey, and will also be staring in the movie "500 Days of Summer" that opens next week. These are just two of her many accomplishments in film, and I'm sure it's not the last we will be seeing of her. I am very influenced and inspired by Zooey's sense of style. More often than not her look reminds me of a young woman from the nineteen fifties. The fifties are one of my favorites decades for fashion, mostly because I feel it gives you such a classic and beautiful look. Something that I personally feel is rare to find in the Hollywood film scene that Zooey is a part of. The fifties represent simplicity at its best to me in the eyes of fashion, and Zooey Deschanel wears them well.

The second is Joanna Newsom, a solo artist from the small town I grew up in, Nevada City, California. Her unique voice has made her quite famous along with her ability to play the harp, piano, and to write beautiful songs. She is a folk artist in every sense of the word. Joanna has recorded four albums, an EP record, and has been a apart of a number of collaborations. Her style reminds me very much of the late sixties and early seventies. Lots of floral prints, sun dresses, light weight fabrics, and worn boots. Her style is incredible, and I think part of the reason I enjoy it so much is because it reminds me of my childhood. Carefree, and happy.

Vintage Reconstruction

The items you are looking at are vintage pieces that I have reconstructed, and have been listed in our online store today! Also new in the store are some excellent vintage finds that I felt were perfect as is. Stop on by the store to see what's new for summer!

The first piece is a blue vintage cardigan. The cardigan is made out of acrylic and is just about the softest sweater I have laid my hands on. As beautiful as it was, I felt it needed something more. I decided to add a delicate vintage handkerchief to the back with a basic sewing machine using white thread.

This sailboat blouse was originally a dress from the 1970's by Jeanne Durrell that extended past the knee. From the original the length was shortened tremendously and was hemmed with navy blue thread. From there red vintage buttons were hand sewn on to the cuffs to add a decorative feel, and to also secure the cuffs placement.

This adorable prairie dress was originally three quarter sleeved and the length extended past the knee with the same trimming you see on the collar. From the original the sleeves were removed and the length was shortened. The armholes are unfinished, but were originally sewn with an over lock machine and that seam is now exposed. The hem is completely unfinished, a raw edge that will fray a bit over time, but is necessary unless you wish to add trimming on to the end due to the sheerness of the dress.

This last reconstruction piece listed today was a simple sweater vest . From the original a vintage scarf was draped on the left side of the chest to create a flower type design. The fabric was hand sewn to secure the design properly with chocolate brown thread.

Invitation to LOOKBOOK!

So this morning I woke up to a kind, kind e-mail notifying me that I have been invited to LOOKBOOK. For those of you who aren't familiar with LOOKBOOK, (I'm new myself) it is an online forum for individuals who are interested in fashion to post their personal "looks". The users of LOOKBOOK are then given the opportunity to hype others looks, bringing their popularity either up or down.

I just uploaded my very first look. It was taken for a photo shoot titled "Hippie Love" for Raggedy Threads Vintage Shoppe. With the exception of the black high waisted jeans, which are from American Apparel, everything is genuine vintage from Raggedy Threads. I have made posts about Raggedy Threads in the past, but they specialize in amazing rock tees (like this Beatles one in the photo), beautiful vintage dresses, and must have westerns & flannels. Apartamento Fashion

Apartamento is an incredible magazine highlighting incredible apartments in some of the major cities in the United States. As I am holding the most current issue in my hand I am amazed by the creativity that seems to spark from simplicity. Since I am an apartment dweller, I am always interested in what others do with such small spaces. The photo featured above is taken from an apartment in the East Village of downtown New York City. It gives me comfort that others have seemed to create a place of peace within the hustle and bustle of the city life. Living in a busy city myself, I am happy to find a place to enjoy a moment of solitude and reflect on the incredible amounts of inspiration for art and fashion walking the streets just outside my window. It's hard for me to determine where my inspiration comes from directly, because there are so many aspects of life that reflect the way we dress and that shape our individual style. But for the purpose of this posting, since we are speaking of apartments and homes and such, I am convinced that the building I live in with all of it's cracks, chips, and history has helped to bring about my design aesthetic, and personal sense of fashion. I am head over heels in love with fashion of our past. I can't tell you what it is, but it is what I feel comfortable with as an everyday dresser, and as a designer. This photo gives me the same vintage influence that my own home does. While they are very different, I can picture a lady living in this apartment dressed as such:

Inspiration I ffffound

Some inspiration I found on ffffound. I often find myself clicking endlessly through photographs, and I decided that this morning I would find some sort of purpose in doing so. My purpose; to find inspiration for new vintage pieces for my online etsy shop. Tomorrow will be a vintage hunting day for me, and these photographs will stay near as I look for beautiful pieces for spring and summer.
